Hainan Itinerary: A Complete Hainan Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors

Hainan at a Glance

Hainan Island is located at the southernmost tip of China. Its land area is about 33,900 square kilometers, which may be larger than you expect (roughly the size of 60 Phuket Islands, 22 Oahu Islands, or 6 Bali Islands). But the island has good infrastructure, including a high-speed railway loop around the island, so getting around is easy.

For most visitors, Hainan may seem like nothing more than a tropical resort destination.
But the island actually has a population of more than 10 million, and tourism is only one of its main industries. It is also home to the world’s first commercial underwater AI computing cluster and is one of China’s space launch bases. China’s space station and heavy-lift rockets are launched from Wenchang, Hainan. Rocket launches are open to the public, but only a rough launch window is announced in advance. The exact launch time is usually announced 1–3 days beforehand, and traffic controls or last-minute cancellations are common. Because of this, it can be difficult for international travelers to fit a launch into a planned itinerary.

Best time to visit Hainan
Hainan has a tropical monsoon climate with a dry season and a rainy season.

• The dry season runs from November to April, with less rain and dry air. Northern Hainan (such as Haikou) is occasionally hit by cold fronts, and temperatures can drop to 10–15°C. Southern Hainan (such as Sanya) is barely affected and usually stays around 22–30°C. The good news is that Hainan is cooler than tropical destinations in Southeast Asia like Thailand. The downside is that on cloudy days or when cold fronts hit, the ocean temperature drops to around 25°C and can feel a bit chilly for swimming.
• The rainy season runs from May to October, with average temperatures of 26–32°C. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and July to October is peak typhoon season. However, this is a great time for water sports, and hotel prices are usually much lower.
• Mid-January to mid-February is the peak travel period in Hainan due to winter school holidays and Chinese New Year, when many domestic families visit to escape the cold.

Haikou vs. Sanya: Which Should You Visit?

Hainan Island has eight major cities, but if this is your first trip, you only need to focus on Haikou and Sanya.

• Haikou: Optional. Located in northern Hainan, Haikou is the provincial capital with a population of about 3 million. It lacks the typical tropical resort vibe, but it offers more flight options and generally cheaper airfares, making it a convenient entry point or stopover city.
• Sanya: A must for a beach vacation. Located in southern Hainan, Sanya is a resort city packed with hotels. It has fewer flight options, and airfares are generally higher.
• Haikou and Sanya are about 285 km apart, but they are connected by high-speed train, with the fastest route taking only about 1.5 hours.

In short:
If you have limited time and just want a beach vacation, fly directly to Sanya.
If you have extra time and are interested in Haikou’s cultural sights, fly to Haikou first, spend half a day or a full day there, and then take the high-speed train to Sanya.

Sample 5-Day Hainan Itinerary

• Day 1: Arrive at Haikou Meilan Airport around noon. Head to the Wormhole Library in the late afternoon for the sunset, then walk around Qilou Old Street in the evening.

• Day 2:

  • If you are interested in volcanic landscapes, visit Haikou Volcanic Crater Park in the morning. The park is small and takes about 1.5 hours to tour, but it is a 40-minute drive each way from downtown, so plan to set aside the whole morning.
  • After lunch, take the high-speed train to Sanya (1.5–2 hours), check into your hotel, and enjoy a stroll by the beach.

• Day 3 & Day 4:

  • Relax in the sun, enjoy the ocean, and spend time at your resort.
  • If visibility is clear, you can visit Luhuitou Scenic Area (free admission, ~1 hour) or Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park (paid admission, a large park with a glass bridge and panoramic viewpoints; allow 3–4 hours).
  • If you love water parks and slides, visit Atlantis Aquaventure (allow at least half a day).
  • If you want to shop, visit the CDF Sanya International Duty Free Shopping Complex (2–3 hours).

Qilou Old Street

Qilou Old Street is not just a single street. It is the largest and best-preserved group of arcade-style historic buildings in China, covering about 2 square kilometers and mostly built in the 1920s and 1930s. The main street, Zhongshan Road, is now a commercial pedestrian area, while the inner alleys remain authentic residential neighborhoods. They can be noisy, but they offer a great glimpse into local life.

Opening hours: Open 24 hours.
Admission: Free.
Time needed: 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Tips for visiting:

• Sunlight in Hainan is very intense, so try to avoid visiting in the hot afternoon. Most visitors prefer coming in the evening.
• The busiest street is Zhongshan Road (about 500 meters long), which is lined with snack stalls, gift shops, local specialty stores, and cafes.
• I don’t recommend this area for a full sit-down meal. It is much better suited for sampling local street snacks. Small shops with long lines are usually a safe bet. You can try Qingbuliang 清补凉, a traditional Hainan chilled dessert made with coconut milk, barley, taro, sago, red beans, and fruit. You can also try Hainan rice noodles 海南粉, which are tossed in a savory-sweet sauce and served dry (without soup). If you don’t feel adventurous, buy a cup of freshly squeezed sugarcane juice from a street stall—it’s also a popular local favorite.
• If you prefer a comfortable restaurant for a full meal, take a taxi to a nearby shopping mall like ‘海口万象城 The MixC Haikou’ (5 km / 15 minutes) or ‘龙湖海南海口天街 Haikou Paradise Walk’ (7 km / 20 minutes).

Wormhole Library

A striking seaside building that serves as a public reading space. It holds around 10,000 books, mostly focusing on literature, art, and history.

Opening hours: Closed on Mondays; Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00 AM–10:00 PM.
Admission: Free, but an advance reservation is required to enter.
Time needed: 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Tips for visiting:

• To go inside, you must reserve a ticket through the WeChat official account ‘海口云洞图书馆’. Reservations open 7 days in advance, but spots fill up fast.
• If you can’t read Chinese and can’t complete the WeChat reservation, you can pay ¥68 per person on site for an afternoon tea set to gain entry (includes one drink + one small cake, though the food itself is fairly average).
• However, most people simply come here to watch the sunset along the waterfront outside.
• Sunset quality depends heavily on cloud cover and weather conditions. You can check the local sunset forecast on this website before heading out.

Haikou Volcanic Crater Park

The park features four volcanic cones:

• Fengluling: At 222.8 meters above sea level, it is the highest point in Haikou and can be climbed.
• Baoziling: At 186.75 meters above sea level, it is fenced off and can only be viewed from a distance.
• Yanjingling: Consists of two small secondary volcanic cones attached to the side of Fengluling. They are also fenced off and can only be viewed from a distance.

Opening hours: Summer: 7:30 AM–6:30 PM; Spring, Autumn, and Winter: 8:00 AM–6:00 PM. Last entry is at 5:30 PM.
Admission: ¥45 during low season (May–September); ¥54 during high season (October–April). Tickets are purchased on site.
Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hours.
Tips for visiting:

• The park is quite small. Follow the path to the Fengluling crater, climb to the summit, walk the loop trail for views over Haikou, and then head back down the same way.
• The stone monuments, temples, and plazas in the park are built from dark basalt rock, which adds a distinct local feel.
• There is also a small volcano museum showcasing photos, models, and rock specimens.

Is it worth it?
These volcanic cones were formed 8,000–13,000 years ago. After thousands of years of rain and weathering, they now look like ordinary green hills. If you are expecting dramatic black lava or classic volcanic craters, you might be disappointed.

Feng Xiaogang Movie Town

Opened in 2014, this is a movie filming set and tourist park. When a production crew is filming, small sections may be temporarily closed, but most of the site remains open to visitors.

Opening hours: 9:00 AM–10:00 PM (last entry at 9:00 PM). Note that the Dongfanghong area closes earlier, stopping last entries at 5:00 PM.
Admission: ¥238 at the ticket counter, or ¥198 online. Free for children under 1.2 meters and seniors over 70. You can book in advance on Trip.com.

Is it worth it?

• Because these are film sets rather than real historical buildings, and ticket prices are fairly high, the park doesn’t attract large crowds.
• It is mainly suitable for travelers interested in modern Chinese pop culture, photography enthusiasts, or those with plenty of extra time.

Time needed: About 1.5 hours.
Tips for visiting:

• The park is split into three zones: Jiangchengyao Fanghua 江城谣芳华 (91 buildings recreating 1940s Chongqing), Nanyangchao 南洋潮 (over 70 arcade-style buildings recreating Southeast Asian Chinese streets), and Dongfanghong 东方红 (recreating 1950s Beijing hutongs, courtyards, and retro propaganda walls).
• Most storefronts are just decorative sets. Only a few cafes, restaurants, and costume rental shops are active. You can pay ¥50–100 to rent 20th-century style Chinese costumes for photos.

Haikou has no metro system, so using ride-hailing apps (like Didi) is the most convenient way to get around.

One of the best vantage points to look out over Yalong Bay. The main drawback is that it is quite commercialized, with many optional paid activities inside.

Time needed: 3 to 4 hours.
Tips for visiting:

• The park shuttle bus makes three stops. Even if you want to walk, you still need to ride the bus for at least one section.
• Stop 1 (Orchid Valley): A small garden that takes about 10–20 minutes to see. If you enjoy hiking, you can climb the trail from here to Summit Park at Stop 3 (a 40–60 minute uphill walk). The trail has no side paths, so it’s impossible to get lost, and many travelers enjoy the workout.
• Stop 2 (Crossing-the-River Dragon Suspension Bridge): You can pay ¥20 extra to cross this 168-meter suspension bridge hanging 40 meters above the canyon. Alternatively, take the free canyon walking trail (about 20 minutes) and rejoin the shuttle bus to Summit Park on the other side.
• Stop 3 (Summit Park): Located 450 meters above sea level with great views over Yalong Bay. The glass bridge next to it costs an extra ¥98. Although pricey, most visitors feel the views are noticeably better than from the free viewing platforms.
• To head back down, you can take the shuttle bus or ride the 1,314-meter zipline down to Orchid Valley for an extra ¥100, then catch the bus down the rest of the way.

Is it worth it?

• On clear days with high visibility, taking the bus up, hiking a bit, and enjoying the summit views is a fun experience.
• If you take the shuttle bus all the way to the top but choose not to pay extra for the glass bridge or suspension bridge, you might find the experience underwhelming. If your only goal is a high viewpoint over the bay, Luhuitou Scenic Area is a better choice since entry is free.

Time needed: Half a day.
Tips:

• Most slides require a minimum height of 1.22 m, while the extreme thrill slides require 1.3 m.
• Ocean and outdoor water temperatures in Sanya get cool in winter (December–February, with January being the coldest). Although slide and lazy river pools are heated to 26°C, it’s best to visit during sunny afternoons to stay comfortable.
• Outside food and drinks are allowed. Food stands inside charge ¥18–28 for drinks and around ¥70 for basic meals.
• Bring your own towel, or rent one for ¥30 (free for Atlantis hotel guests).
• Small day lockers inside the park cost ¥5 per use (capped at ¥25/day). Free open storage shelves are also available near slides.
• Medium (¥70/day) and large (¥90/day) lockers are available near the entrance, but they are a bit of a walk from the main pool area.

• In addition to the water park, the resort offers the ‘C Show’ theater and the Lost Chambers Aquarium.

Tips for visiting:

• You can walk to the summit platform (about 30 minutes uphill) or ride the park shuttle bus (¥28 round trip). If you walk up, you can buy a one-way downhill ticket for ¥14 at the top.
• Views are best around golden hour and sunset, but expect crowds.
• Scenic rooftop cafes operate at the top. Drinks cost ¥30–40, though prime view seating usually requires a minimum spend of around ¥70 per person.

Note: Phoenix Ridge is another nearby hilltop park with a cable car (398 meters above sea level). However, its platforms are set much farther back from the coast, so the views aren’t as impressive as Luhuitou’s. I’d skip it.

First Market Night Market
By day, this is a local produce and seafood market; by night, it turns into a bustling tourist night market.

Opening hours: 5:30 PM–11:00 PM.

Time needed: 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Tips for visiting: Great for strolling and trying local street food. Buying fresh seafood here requires bargaining and caution—see details below.
Tips:

• If you want to buy live seafood to take to a restaurant, compare prices across multiple vendors and bargain firmly. Prices vary based on daily supply, size, and seafood quality.
• Restaurant promoters will follow you around the market offering to cook your seafood. Feel free to decline. Look for processing restaurants independently that look clean and popular. Cooking fees follow local price guidelines, so while you can negotiate slightly, fees are fairly uniform across restaurants.
• Local catches around Hainan are limited, so much of the seafood sold here is shipped from other provinces (or imported, like Russian king crab). Don’t assume seafood is automatically cheap just because Hainan is an island!

How to Get to Hainan

Flying is the easiest way to reach Hainan, whether traveling from mainland China or abroad.

You can fly into either Haikou or Sanya.
Haikou serves as the island’s main transit hub with cheaper flights, while Sanya is the primary beach destination.

From Haikou Meilan Airport to Downtown Haikou

Haikou Meilan Airport has two terminals: T1 (domestic) and T2 (domestic and international). A free inter-terminal shuttle bus runs every 5 minutes.

The airport is 25 km from downtown Haikou (a 35–45 minute drive).

• Ride-hailing (Didi): Offers the best value at around ¥50. Follow airport signage to the designated app pickup areas.
• Taxis: Cost around ¥70 (higher late at night), but you can simply join the official taxi queue at arrivals.

From Sanya Phoenix Airport to the Beaches

Sanya Phoenix Airport has four terminals. T1, T2, and T3 handle domestic flights (T1 and T2 connect directly; T3 requires an 8-minute shuttle ride). The international terminal is a standalone building reached via a 5-minute shuttle ride to T1/T2.

Note: Outside Gate 5 of T2 Arrivals, the Airport Transit Hub operates 7-seater mini-shuttles to Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay hotels for ¥35/person. They depart once full and drop passengers off directly at resort entrances.

Can You Take a Train to Hainan?

Because no bridge connects Hainan to mainland China (due to deep sea trenches, typhoons, and earthquake risk), passenger trains travel onto massive rail ferries to cross the Qiongzhou Strait. At the port, train carriages are uncoupled, split into four sections, and rolled onto the ferry while passengers remain inside. The ferry crossing takes about 1 hour, and the train is re-assembled on the other side. The whole process adds 3–4 hours. Trains also shut off power for ~30 minutes during boarding, making carriages hot. Ferries regularly pause service during storms and fog, so taking the train onto the island is not recommended.

How to Travel Between Haikou and Sanya

Haikou and Sanya are about 285 km apart.

• High-speed train: The best choice by far. Takes 1.5–2 hours, with tickets starting at ¥108.
• Ride-hailing (Didi): Costs around ¥500 and takes ~3.5 hours, but getting a driver to accept can be difficult. Many drivers dislike long platform commission fees and may call asking for ¥50–100 in extra cash, or cancel if there is a language barrier.
• Long-distance buses: Cheap (¥55), but slow (4–4.5 hours). They run from Haikou East Bus Station to Sanya stations and can be tricky to navigate without Chinese.

Taking the High-Speed Train Between Haikou and Sanya

Main train stations in Haikou:

• Meilan Station 美兰站: Located underground (B1) between T1 and T2 at Haikou Meilan Airport. Perfect if you land in Haikou and want to head straight to Sanya without visiting downtown.
• Haikou East Station 海口东站: Located in downtown Haikou (15–20 minutes by taxi from the center), making it convenient if you spend a day sightseeing in Haikou first.

Main train stations in Sanya:

• Yalong Bay Station 亚龙湾站: Closest to resorts in Yalong Bay (20 mins / ~¥25 by taxi) and Haitang Bay (30 mins / ~¥50 by taxi).
• Sanya Station 三亚站: Closest to Dadonghai hotels (25 mins / ~¥30 by taxi).

Meilan Station - Yalong Bay Station:
~1.5 hours, from ¥108 (~1 train per hour).
Meilan Station - Sanya Station:
~1 hour 40 minutes, from ¥113 (1–2 trains per hour).
Haikou East Station - Yalong Bay Station:
~1 hour 40 minutes, from ¥114 (~1 train per hour).
Haikou East Station - Sanya Station:
~1 hour 50 minutes, from ¥119 (1–2 trains per hour).

Important Notes:

• Hainan’s high-speed rail forms a complete loop around the island. Fast trains take the East Coast route (~1h 40m). Slow trains take the West Coast route (~3h 10m). Always double-check your train duration before booking!
• If taking the train immediately after landing at Meilan Airport, book a train scheduled at least 1 hour after your flight landing time. If flight delays cause you to miss it, you can exchange your ticket at the station counter for a later train on the same day for free (subject to seat availability).
• Ticket gates close 3 minutes before train departures, and ticket checking opens 15 minutes prior.
