Shenzhen Itinerary: A Complete 2-Day Guide for First-Time Visitors

Shenzhen is located in southern China, bordering Hong Kong. It was once a small border county, but in 1980 it was designated as one of China’s first Special Economic Zones. Since then, it has attracted young people from all over the country to work and start businesses here, driving rapid economic growth.

Today, Shenzhen has a population of around 18 million, with an average age of just 32.5, making it one of the youngest major cities in China. The city’s core industries are electronics, information technology, and advanced manufacturing. Many globally known companies were founded in Shenzhen, including:

  • Huawei (a global leader in telecommunications equipment)
  • DJI (the world’s leading drone manufacturer)
  • BYD (a leading electric vehicle and battery company)
  • Tencent (a leader in social media, gaming, and digital services)

Is Shenzhen worth visiting?: Compared with other major Chinese cities, Shenzhen does not have a long history, and its attractions aren’t particularly unique. It is best suited as a side trip when visiting nearby cities such as Guangzhou or Hong Kong, rather than a standalone destination.

When to visit:

  • Late October to early February is the best time to visit. Temperatures range from 18–26°C, with low rainfall and generally dry, comfortable weather.

  • March is also relatively pleasant, with mild temperatures, but it tends to be humid and rainy.

  • April to September is generally hot, with daytime highs often exceeding 33°C. From July to September, heavy rainstorms and typhoons are also common, making travel less comfortable.

  • Try to avoid China’s summer holidays and public holidays, when tourist sites can become very crowded.

Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX)

The airport is about 32 km from the city center. The easiest way to reach downtown is by ride-hailing or the metro.

If you are staying at the Crystal Hotel Shenzhen Bay MixC:

  • Didi (Ride-hailing): About 30 minutes, around RMB 100.
  • Metro: Take Metro Line 11 directly to Houhai Station 后海 (no transfer needed).
    • Travel time: 21 minutes
    • Fare: RMB 7
    • Operating hours: 5:36 AM – 11:40 PM
    • Directions: Take Exit M, then walk about 5 minutes to the hotel.

Tip: You can also follow the airport signs to the official taxi queue. However, traditional taxis are usually slightly more expensive than Didi, and the vehicle quality varies. It is highly recommended to have your hotel name and address written in Chinese characters to show the driver.

Shenzhen North Railway Station

Shenzhen has several railway stations, but Shenzhen North is the main transportation hub. It connects high-speed trains to Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing with the most frequent departures.

If you are staying at the Pullman Shenzhen North:

  • The hotel is located just northeast of the station, about a 5-minute walk away.

If you are staying at the Crystal Hotel Shenzhen Bay MixC:

  • Didi (Ride-hailing): About 35 minutes, around RMB 70.
  • Metro: Take Metro Line 5 to Liuxiandong Station 留仙洞, then transfer to Metro Line 13 to Houhai Station 后海.
    • Total travel time: About 40 minutes
    • Fare: RMB 7
    • Operating hours: 5:50 AM – 11:40 PM
    • Directions: Take Exit M, then walk about 5 minutes to the hotel.

Tip: During holidays or rush hours, traffic congestion around the railway station can be terrible. If you are ordering a Didi, we recommend walking 5 minutes to the entrance of the Pullman Shenzhen North hotel and setting that as your pickup point to avoid the station crowds.

Getting from Guangzhou to Shenzhen

Guangzhou is about 102 km from Shenzhen. The best way to travel is by high-speed rail from Guangzhou South (Guangzhounan) Railway Station.

You can choose between two arrival stations in Shenzhen depending on your hotel location:

Option 1: Arriving at Shenzhen North (Shenzhenbei)

  • Travel time: 29–38 minutes.
  • Ticket price: Starts from RMB 75.
  • Departure frequency: Trains run every 5–10 minutes during peak hours, and every 15–30 minutes during off-peak hours.
  • City connection: About a 30-minute drive to central Shenzhen.

Option 2: Arriving at Futian

  • Travel time: 42–59 minutes.
  • Ticket price: Starts from RMB 82.
  • Departure frequency: Roughly one train per hour on average.
  • City connection: Located right in central Shenzhen, making it the most convenient option if your hotel is downtown.

Getting from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen

Hong Kong International Airport is about 35 km from Shenzhen. Here are the three best ways to make the trip:

Option 1: Taxi (Most convenient)

  • Follow the airport signs to the taxi stand. The queues are divided by destination—look for the line for Green Taxis (New Territories).
  • Tell the driver you want to go to Shenzhen Bay Port.
  • Fare: Around HKD 250.
  • Travel time: About 30 minutes.
  • Next Steps: Once you arrive at Shenzhen Bay Port, go through border control (takes about 15–30 minutes). After clearing customs, you can take a taxi or the metro to your hotel. For instance, if you stay at the recommended Orange Crystal Hotel (Shenzhen Bay MixC), it is just a 10-minute taxi ride or a 17-minute metro ride from the port.

Option 2: Public Bus (Cheapest option)

  • Follow the signs in the airport to the Ground Transportation Centre (Bus Terminus).
  • Take Bus A36 and get off at Hung Kiu Station 红桥(Yuen Long direction).
  • Transfer to Bus B3X which goes directly to Shenzhen Bay Port.
  • Total cost: Around HKD 36.
  • Travel time: 45–60 minutes (depending on waiting time).
  • Operating hours: 6:15 AM – 11:05 PM.
  • Next Steps: After arriving at the port, follow the border control process described above.

Option 3: Direct Cross-Border Bus (Balanced option)

  • If you are traveling alone and want to avoid transfers without paying for a taxi, this is a great choice.
  • The ticket counters are located in the Arrivals Hall.
  • Fare: Around RMB 140 per person.
  • Travel time: About 45 minutes to the port.

Getting from Hong Kong City to Shenzhen

Downtown Hong Kong is about 30 km from Shenzhen. The best and fastest option is the high-speed rail from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station.

You can choose between two arrival stations in Shenzhen:

Option 1: Arriving at Futian

  • Travel time: About 14 minutes.
  • Ticket price: Starts from RMB 68.
  • Departure frequency: Around every 15 minutes.
  • Pros & Cons: Located right in central Shenzhen, making city access incredibly easy. However, it is a smaller station with fewer high-speed rail connections to other major Chinese cities.

Option 2: Arriving at Shenzhen North (Shenzhenbei)

  • Travel time: About 20 minutes.
  • Ticket price: Starts from RMB 75.
  • Departure frequency: Every 5–10 minutes.
  • Pros & Cons: It is about a 30-minute drive to downtown, but it is a massive transportation hub with endless connections across China. If you only plan to stay in Shenzhen for one night, arriving here and staying nearby is highly recommended.

Important Tips:

  • Allow Extra Time: Since you are crossing the border, you will go through border control (both Hong Kong and Mainland China customs) inside West Kowloon Station. We highly recommend arriving at the station at least 1 hour before your departure.
  • Missed Your Train? Don’t worry. If you miss your train, you can usually change your ticket for free to another train on the same day. Just talk to the station staff within 1 hour after your scheduled departure.

Getting Around Shenzhen:

  • Didi (Ride-hailing): The easiest and most convenient way to get around the city.
  • Metro: The Shenzhen Metro is modern, reliable, and very tourist-friendly. It supports contactless payments, meaning you can simply tap your international credit card at the turnstile to enter.
  • Rush Hour Tip: Try to avoid traveling between 7:00–9:30 AM and 5:00–7:30 PM. During these times, both the roads and the metro stations become incredibly packed with commuters.

Safety note
Some e-bike riders do not always follow traffic rules (such as ignoring traffic lights or riding fast on sidewalks). Please stay alert and watch your surroundings when walking around the city.

Robotaxis (Driverless Cars)
China is actively testing autonomous ride-hailing services in several major cities, and Shenzhen is at the forefront of this trend. If you want to experience a driverless ride, you can book one via the Pony.ai Mini-Program inside WeChat. However, keep a few things in mind:

  • Limited Coverage: The service currently only operates in selected areas of Shenzhen.

  • Wait Times: Availability is limited, so expect waiting times of around 5–20 minutes.

  • Fixed Stops Only: Unlike regular Didi cars, Robotaxis will not pull over just anywhere. The system will direct you to the nearest fixed pickup and drop-off points to avoid narrow residential alleys, schools, hospitals, and other heavily crowded areas.

  • Cost & Speed: The fares are generally cheaper than regular Didi rides, but the driving speed is slightly slower and more cautious.

Nantou Ancient Town

Nantou Ancient Town has a history dating back around 1,700 years. It once served as a regional administrative center governing a massive area that included present-day Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

In recent decades, however, the area gradually evolved into a dense, somewhat chaotic “urban village” (a unique Chinese phenomenon where historic rural enclaves were swallowed up by rapid city growth). Around 2019, the neighborhood underwent a massive revitalization project. While basic infrastructure like electricity and water systems were upgraded, many buildings along the main streets were renovated to house independent bookstores, design studios, cafes, and art spaces.

The most fascinating part? If you step off the main paths into the side alleys, you will still find a fully lived-in neighborhood home to around 30,000 local residents.

Summary: Do not expect a perfectly preserved, historical ancient town. Instead, it is best understood as a creative hipster district blending authentic local life with modern cultural spaces. If you love wandering through narrow alleys, people-watching, and exploring boutique shops, it is well worth a visit.

Opening Hours: 24 hours
Admission: Free
Recommended Visit Time: Around 1 hour
What to do

  • Explore & Shop: Wander the main streets to check out local restaurants, independent boutiques, and cafes.
  • Visit Mini-Museums: Check out the small, free-entry exhibition spaces scattered around the area focusing on local history and traditional ceramics.

Only if You Have Extra Time

Huaqiangbei

Huaqiangbei is one of the largest electronics markets in Asia, home to over 35 massive malls and more than 100,000 vendors. Within a single kilometer, you can see the entire lifecycle of a tech product: design, sourcing, prototyping, assembly, and repair. It is famous worldwide for its insane speed—industry insiders joke that you can have an idea in the morning, a prototype in the afternoon, and mass production within a week.

Is it right for you?

  • Go if: You are a tech enthusiast who wants to see an unbelievable ocean of gadgets, components, and quirky tech, or if you are looking to source components in bulk.

  • Skip if: You are looking to buy brand-name electronics with reliable international warranties. This is definitely not the place.

Crucial Insider Context:

  • The Price Trap: Although retail shopping is available, prices here are often higher than what you can find on Chinese online platforms.
  • Spotting Fakes: While brand-name products are sold, you must be extremely careful—refurbished, modified, or counterfeit (fake) devices are very common.
  • No After-Sales Service: Cheap, unbranded electronics are everywhere, but their quality is highly inconsistent. Many stop working within a few months, and there is absolutely no warranty or after-sales support.

Shopping Tips if You Do Go:

  • Timing: Shops usually don’t open until after 11:00 AM.

  • Skip the Lower Floors: Avoid buying from the 1st and 2nd floors of the major malls, as these prime spots usually have the highest markups.

  • Haggle and Compare: Always check multiple shops and negotiate hard. Prices for the exact same item can vary wildly from stall to stall.

  • Avoid Main Devices: Do not buy your primary everyday gadgets (like your main phone or laptop) here.

Getting There:

  • By Didi (Ride-hailing): Set your destination to “Huaqiang International Electronics World 华强国际电子世界”.
  • By Metro: Take the metro to Huaqiangbei Station 华强北. Any exit works perfectly—you will be surrounded by electronics markets the moment you step out.

Opening Hours: 24 hours (Night hiking is strongly discouraged for safety reasons).
Admission: Free.
Recommended Visit Time: Around 4 hours.

The Best Hiking Route:
There are 6 different trails up the mountain, but the shortest and most efficient route to the highest point is the Xiutong Trail (秀桐道).

  • Distance: 2.6 km (one-way).
  • Elevation Gain: ~800 meters.
  • Duration: ~2 hours uphill / ~1.5 hours downhill.
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging (expect a lot of stairs).
  • Trail Condition: The path is well-marked and leads straight to the summit, Dawutong Peak (大梧桐顶).

Wild Boar Alert:
You might occasionally spot wild boars along the trail. While they are generally not aggressive, they can charge if startled. Keep a safe distance, stay calm, and do not feed them

Getting There:

  • By Didi (Ride-hailing): Set your destination to “Xiutong Trailhead 秀桐道起点”.
  • By Metro: Take Metro Line 8 to Shenwai Senior High School Station (深外高中), take Exit C, and walk about 15 minutes to the trailhead (or use a map app to navigate to “Xiutong Trailhead”).
