The distance between Kyoto and Osaka is about 55 kilometers (34 miles). Several railway lines connect the two cities, the most popular being Japan Railways (JR) and Hankyu Railway. Kansai map

Japan Railways (JR)

For most travelers, whether or not they have a JR Pass, the JR Kyoto Line is the top choice.

  • While you can also take the Shinkansen (bullet train), it arrives at Shin-Osaka Station, which is less convenient for most travelers, so it’s not the recommended option.

Hankyu Railway

If you’re staying near Karasuma Station in Kyoto and don’t have a JR Pass, this route is a good choice.
